And what it had been holding back was not teeth.\n\nIt was *them.*\n\nThe crystallized dead — the frozen army of the assimilated, the hundreds of fools rendered to terrain over the years — *moved.* All at once, all across the inner ring, the deep keeper reached into the bodies it had eaten and made them *its hands*, and the cathedral of the dead came alive and turned on the living coalition that had walked into its heart. The frozen vampire-pale soldier mid-stride finished his stride. The crystallized woman whose eyes had moved turned her whole faceted body. A frozen army of every tradition that had ever died here — qi-cultivators and jinn-men and warlords and soldiers, all the failed expeditions of all the years, all rendered to crystal and all now puppeted by the world-old mind at the core — rose out of the terrain and closed on the coalition from every side at once, the deep keeper's true strength revealed: it did not need to grow defenses, it *wore its dead enemies as armor and army both.*\n\nAnd the coalition, faced with the horror of fighting the crystallized corpses of people they'd watched die on the way in, faced with the certainty that losing meant *joining that army*, did exactly what the keeper had counted on. It broke.\n\n---\n\nIt broke along every fracture line the keeper had let the field carve into itself.\n\nThe warlords broke first — turned, abandoned the push, decided the prize wasn't worth crystallizing for and tried to cut their way back out, and in doing so collapsed one whole flank of the coalition's formation and let the crystal-army pour through. Tariq's jinn-caravan, seeing the flank gone, made the cold desert calculation and pulled to save themselves, jinn-fire covering their retreat and damning everyone they left. The Vanguard — Hayes's Americans — held longest of the foreigners, discipline and firepower, but they were a recruitment expedition, not a martyrdom, and when Theo went down (Krishna saw it, the nerdy tech-awakener overwhelmed, saw Hayes make the choice to save his people over the prize) they pulled too, a fighting withdrawal, gone. The field the deep keeper had patiently thinned for a week shattered in an hour into every-tradition-for-itself, exactly as built, exactly as planned, the coalition dissolving into a rout with the crystal-dead pouring into every gap.\n\nAnd Krishna's cold little company — Krishna, faded; Tara, in her cover; the Council's awakened and soldiers and the saffron monks who would not run — was left at the edge of the third ring, nearly alone, with the inner deathzone come alive around them and the way back closing in crystal and the deepest danger finally, fully revealed: *the keeper turns the dead into its army, and everyone who falls here falls onto the wrong side.*\n\nThe Shens stayed.\n\nThat was the thing Krishna would remember. When the field broke and the foreigners ran, the qi-pair — who had offered him recognition and not friendship, who owed him nothing — planted their feet beside the Council's line, sword and fan against the crystal-dead, and Shen caught Krishna's eye across the carnage and gave one short fierce nod: *the serious stand with the serious, when the fools run.* The honorable peers had meant what they said. And it still wasn't enough — Krishna could see it wasn't enough, could see the cold math of it, the dwindling line and the endless crystal army and the way back sealing, could see his whole company about to crystallize standing up at the edge of the prize with their eyes still moving — and he had one thing left, the thing he had carried across a continent for exactly this moment, the thing he had sworn not to spend until there was no other coin to pay.\n\nThe dimensional Anchor. The grade-1 Anchor he'd built into himself before he left — the device that could, once, for a moment, *reconnect him to his empire across the impossible distance*, give the faded king his full reach back, unfade him, make Krishna Verma at the heart of an alien deathzone into Krishna Verma the King again, for as long as it lasted.\n\nHe'd meant to save it for the core. For the keeper. For the prize.\n\nHe spent it here, because there would be no core and no prize and no keeper if the breaking point swallowed them at the edge of the third ring — and as the crystal-dead closed over his dwindling company and the Shens' line buckled and Tara's cover-calm finally cracked into something like fear, Krishna Verma reached down into himself and *broke the Anchor open.*\n\n---\n\nIt was like surfacing from deep water after a week of drowning and not knowing you were drowning.\n\nThe fade *tore off.* Two thousand kilometers of distance that had pressed his god's-eye sense down to an arm's length and his will down to a man's snapped shut to nothing, the Anchor reaching across the impossible dark and grabbing the far green sprawl of his empire and *yanking it home into him*, and Krishna Verma stood up in the heart of the crystalline deathzone and was, for the first time since he'd left the plains, *whole.*\n\nHis sense exploded outward — the whole third ring at once, every crystal-corpse, every facet of the keeper's cathedral, the watching mind at the core, the texture and weight and flow of all of it, the blind faded man suddenly seeing the entire battlefield like a god looking down at a map. His will came back — the telekinetic strength that could fold a tank, the reach that had ruled a province, all of it, here, now, in his hands. The cold counting-room king who had crossed a continent disguised as a mortal merchant stood at the edge of the inner deathzone with his full power roaring back into him and the crystal-dead army closing in, and he *smiled*, the first real smile in a week, because the breaking point had just broken the wrong way for the keeper.\n\n\"All right,\" Krishna said softly, and the crystalline cathedral seemed to *flinch*, the world-old mind at the core feeling the faded line-item at its edge suddenly blaze up into something it had not counted on, something with reach, something with a will the size of a province. \"You wanted to know what I was hiding.\" His sense had the whole crystal army mapped now, the keeper's strategy laid bare, the way to the core open like a door. \"Here it is.\"\n\n> **System Coin: 1,044,244 · The deep keeper's true strength: it puppets the crystallized dead — wears its eaten enemies as army · The coalition shatters (warlords, jinn, Vanguard rout — exactly as the keeper planned) · The Shens stay (the serious stand with the serious) · Krishna spends the dimensional ANCHOR early — the fade tears off, the King restored whole at the edge of the core.**\n\n*End of Chapter 113.*","totalChapters":160,"chapterLiked":false}
