He watched the number climb in the brass book and felt none of the old animal satisfaction, because for once the wealth wasn't the point. The wealth was just the door. Strength was the room.\n\n> **Strange-stock reserve + accrued farm cycles liquidated.**\n> **+18,400 Coin.**\n> **Balance:** 35,450 Coin\n\nAnd there, glowing on the Exchange where it had hung above his reach for weeks, the door itself:\n\n> **⟢ SKILL — *Body Tempering (Apprentice III)*** — Available. **Cost: 30,000 Coin.**\n> *Advisory: the gap between Apprentice II and III is not the gap between I and II. The vessel that survives it is changed. Many do not survive it. Ensure adequate foundation reserves before attempting advancement.*\n\nThe System did not give warnings. When it gave warnings, men died. It had told him so, in its way, at the river-apex, at the Old Fort. It told him now, and Krishna read *many do not survive it*, and thought about a mild bored hand lifting him off the ground by the throat, and a collector's empty carts coming back at the next moon, and bought the method anyway.\n\n> **Balance:** 5,450 Coin\n\nThirty thousand Coin, gone in a heartbeat — a fortune that would have fed his whole lane for a season, spent on a single dangerous sentence written into his own flesh. He had twenty-five figs in the dark. The method said *adequate foundation reserves.* He didn't know how many *adequate* was. He suspected he was about to find out the hard way, which was the only way the System ever let him find out anything.\n\n---\n\nHe did it on the third night, in the deepest cellar of the enclave, alone — truly alone this time, no Rekha, no one, because the method's warning had been plain and he would not have a witness to whatever this made of him, or to whatever was left if it failed.\n\nHe'd made his arrangements like a man who might not come back. He'd told Imran where the contingencies were, who to trust, how to hold the lane if the cellar went quiet. He'd looked in on his mother and his father, said nothing they'd remember as strange. He'd sat with Aditi for an hour without telling her what he was about to do, and she'd known anyway — she always knew — and she'd held his hand at the end of it and said only, \"Come back the same, if you can. And if you can't—\" she'd stopped, and squeezed, and let it go. \"Just come back.\"\n\nThen he went down into the dark with twenty-five figs in his hand and the method burning behind his eyes, and he began to climb the tier.\n\nThe Apprentice II breakthrough had been a coal swallowed, a body remade over one screaming hour. This was not that. This was a *war* fought inside his own flesh.\n\nHe ate the first fig and the second and the third and drove the refined essence through the gates the way the method demanded, and the prana came — the dense old power of the unsealed city pouring into him — and where Stage 2 had simply filled the spaces the figs burned open, Stage 3 *changed the spaces themselves.* He felt his channels tear and re-form wider, felt his bones go soft and re-set denser, felt the tempering reach past muscle and marrow into something underneath, some deeper architecture the first two stages had only prepared. It was not pain the way a wound is pain. It was the pain of being *unmade and rebuilt while awake* — and the method had been right, he understood somewhere in the red dark, that the vessel that survived it would be changed, because the vessel was being poured out and poured back into a different mould, and a man could lose himself in the pouring.\n\nHe ate the tenth fig. The fifteenth. More than Stage 2 had taken, far more, and still the breakthrough hung incomplete, his channels half-rebuilt and screaming, the prana roaring in faster than the broken gates could hold, and for one black moment Krishna Verma felt the thing the System had warned of — felt himself *coming apart*, the power he'd swallowed too much to hold and not yet enough to finish, the vessel cracking under its own ambition. *This is how they die*, the cold room observed, even now, even dying, still counting. *Too much swallowed. Not enough foundation. The reach exceeds the grasp.*\n\nHe ate the rest of the figs. All of them. Twenty became twenty-five became all that was left, a fortune in stolen vitality poured down his throat in a desperate flood, and it was — barely, barely — enough. The last of the foundation burned through the last of the half-formed gates, and the roaring prana found channels wide enough at last to hold it, and the thing being rebuilt inside Krishna finished its rebuilding a half-breath before it would have torn him to nothing.\n\nHe crossed over in the dark, alone, with his marrow on fire and twenty-five figs gone and tears and blood on his face he didn't remember shedding.\n\n> **【 ADVANCEMENT 】**\n> **Body Tempering — Apprentice III.** *Vessel reforged. Foundation: refined past the common threshold.*\n> *Note: the Apprentice tier nears its ceiling. One stage remains before the gate. What lies beyond the gate is not Tempering, and is not bought. Prepare.*\n\nHe lay on the cold stone for a long time, breathing, *being* — and the body he was breathing in was not the body he'd brought down the stairs. He could feel it in the way the air moved over his skin, in the slow vast power coiled quiet in his rebuilt channels, in the simple fact of his own weight against the floor. He had been strong before. He was something else now. And the System had said a thing it had never said — *one stage remains before the gate*, and *beyond the gate is not Tempering, and is not bought* — and Krishna lay in the dark and understood that the ladder he'd been climbing had a top after all, a place where the merchant's purchased strength ran out and something else began, something that could not be bought, only become.\n\n*Like Arjun*, he thought, dimly, through the exhaustion. *The river-man's strength was never bought. Maybe that's the gate. Maybe past the top of what Coin can buy, everyone has to become what Arjun already is.*\n\nHe filed it. Even now. He filed it, and made himself stand, and climbed the stairs on legs that no longer felt entirely like his, back up into his kingdom, a tier higher than he'd gone down.\n\n---\n\nHe found the collector's measure in himself the next morning, on the wall, in the grey light, and the finding was cold and certain and clean.\n\nHe thought about the mild bored hand that had lifted him off the ground, and he flexed his own rebuilt hand in the dawn, and he knew — not hoped, *knew*, the way he knew the price of things — that the hand which had held him like a kitten a week ago would not hold him now. He had closed the gap. Not all of it, maybe. But enough. Enough that when the collector came back at the next moon with his empty carts and his certainty, he would find a different thing waiting at the gate than the frightened link in the chain he'd left behind.\n\nAditi found him there, and looked at him a long time, reading the change in him the way she read everything, and what was in her face was the old grief and something new under it — something almost like awe, and almost like fear of the awe.\n\n\"You came back,\" she said.\n\n\"Mostly,\" Krishna said. It was honest. Something had been left on that cellar floor, poured out and not entirely poured back; he could feel its absence the way you feel a drawn tooth. He didn't know yet what it had been. He suspected it had been one of the last soft things, and he suspected he'd needed to spend it to survive the climb, and he filed the suspicion with all the others.\n\nHe laid out the rest of it for her, because she was the only one he laid things out for. The collector, a moon away, and the tribute he would refuse to a stronger man's face now that the strength was closer. The Combine on the eastern border, its patience gone, its enforcers counting. Arjun on the river, a peer and a wildcard, who might be courted into a bloc against them both. The Old Fort burning golden-red at the center of the city, a god turning over in its sleep, the prize past the top of every ladder. And himself, Apprentice III, one stage from a gate beyond which strength stopped being a thing you could buy.\n\n\"The quiet season's over,\" he said. \"I built all I'm going to build behind walls. Now I spend it.\" He looked out over his two kingdoms in the dawn — the farms, the militia, the engines only a frail girl could wake, the whole cold machine of what a season had made him. \"The collector comes back and I refuse him to his face, and that starts the war with the south. The Combine moves on us and I meet it. And I court the river-man, because two of me are better than one against a tier I still can't match alone.\" The cold counting room laid it all out, clean and final, the season of building closed and the season of war opened. \"And somewhere in all of it, I climb the last stage, and I find the gate, and I find out what's past the top of the ladder.\"\n\n\"And the Old Fort?\" Aditi asked quietly. \"The thing under the city?\"\n\nKrishna was silent a moment, the golden-red light still burning behind his eyes.\n\n\"That's not for who I am now,\" he said. \"Not for a hundred stages of who I am now. The System told me, and it was afraid when it said it, and it's never afraid.\" He turned from the wall, toward the work, toward the war. \"So I become who it's for. However long it takes. However much it costs.\" The old hunger, bright and cold and entirely himself, the hook swallowed on the first night and grown now into the whole shape of his want. \"All of this — the lanes, the Coin, the kingdoms — it was never the point. It was just the foundation. The reach starts now.\"\n\n> **Balance:** 5,450 Coin\n> **Foundation figs remaining: 0.**\n\nHe had spent everything — the Coin, the figs, a piece of himself he couldn't name — and climbed one tier in a city full of gods. It was not nearly enough. It was, at last, a beginning.\n\n*End of Book 2, Arc 5.*","totalChapters":160,"chapterLiked":false}
